Inflammation: The Good, the Bad and the Chronic
Inflammation has become one of the most frequently used words in conversations about health and wellness.
We hear it in connection with autoimmune disease, neurological conditions, arthritis, digestive disorders, heart disease, diabetes, weight, nutrition, aging, stress, sleep, and mental health.
Social media posts warn us about inflammatory foods. Product labels promise anti-inflammatory benefits. Wellness influencers offer lists of ingredients we are supposedly required to remove from our diets.
With so many warnings coming from so many directions, it is easy to believe that all inflammation is dangerous.
It is not.
Before trying to eliminate inflammation, we need to understand what it is, why the body creates it, and what happens when a helpful protective response continues for too long.
What Is Inflammation?
Inflammation is part of the body’s response to something it perceives as a threat.
That threat might be an infection, injury, bee sting, paper cut, sprained ankle, or broken bone. When something happens, the body sends immune cells and inflammatory signals toward the affected area.
Blood flow increases. The area may become red, warm, swollen, or painful.
These changes can be uncomfortable, but they may also be signs that the body is protecting the injured area and beginning the healing process.
This temporary response is known as acute inflammation.
Acute inflammation appears, performs a job, and ideally settles down once healing occurs or the infection passes.
A bee sting becomes less swollen. A paper cut closes. A sprained ankle gradually improves. A cold clears, and you begin feeling like yourself again.
In these situations, inflammation is not the enemy. It is part of the body’s internal defense system.
What Makes Chronic Inflammation Different?
Chronic inflammation does not resolve in the same way.
Instead of responding to an immediate problem and then stopping, the inflammatory response may remain active. The body continues sending inflammatory signals even though there is no short-term injury left to repair.
This long-term inflammatory state may affect healthy tissues and organs.
Chronic inflammation can be associated with or play a role in cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, certain cancers, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and autoimmune conditions.
That does not mean chronic inflammation is the only cause of these diseases. Health conditions are complex, and the relationship between inflammation, genetics, environment, medical history, and lifestyle varies from person to person.
Inflammation and Autoimmune Disease
For people living with autoimmune or neurological conditions, inflammation is part of a much larger story.
Michele Weston understands this personally through her experience living with multiple sclerosis.
In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks myelin, the protective covering surrounding nerve fibers in the central nervous system. This can disrupt communication between the brain and the rest of the body.
MS cannot be reduced to one symptom, one food, or one lifestyle habit. It involves a complicated relationship between the immune system, nervous system, inflammation, medical treatment, fatigue, movement, nutrition, stress, sleep, and everyday life.
That is why Michele returns to one central message throughout this episode:
The body is interconnected.
The Invisible Signs of Chronic Inflammation
Chronic inflammation can be difficult to recognize because the possible signs are often vague.
A person may experience:
Persistent fatigue
Neurofatigue
Low energy
Aches and pain
Stiffness
Poor sleep
Digestive concerns
Anxiety
Depression
Changes in mood
Difficulty concentrating
A feeling of constantly running on empty
These symptoms can also be associated with chronic illness, medication side effects, stress, hormonal changes, sleep disorders, and other medical concerns.
A symptom list cannot diagnose chronic inflammation. Persistent or changing symptoms should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.
The purpose is not to diagnose yourself. It is to become more aware of patterns in your body and daily life.
The Chronic Illness Feedback Loop
One of the most difficult parts of chronic illness is how quickly symptoms begin affecting one another.
Pain can interfere with sleep.
Poor sleep can increase fatigue.
Fatigue can make movement and exercise more difficult.
Reduced movement may affect strength, mood, and energy.
Stress can interfere with sleep and make existing symptoms feel harder to manage.
Digestive discomfort may affect appetite and food choices.
It can feel like playing whack-a-mole with your health. You address one issue, only to have another appear.
The point is not that every symptom is caused by inflammation.
The point is that the body’s systems do not operate independently.
Inflammation and Sleep
Sleep is an important part of the inflammation conversation.
Inflammatory processes may affect sleep quality and duration. At the same time, disrupted sleep can affect circadian rhythms, stress, energy, mood, immune function, and the gut microbiome.
This can create another difficult cycle.
Someone experiences pain and cannot sleep. The next day, they feel exhausted. That exhaustion makes it more difficult to move, work, prepare meals, concentrate, or manage stress.
The following night, they may struggle to sleep again.
For people living with chronic illness, sleep is not always a matter of simply going to bed earlier. Pain, medication, anxiety, neurological symptoms, digestive concerns, and other factors may interfere.
Sleep concerns deserve to be discussed as part of an overall healthcare plan.
The Gut Microbiome and Immune Function
Researchers and healthcare professionals continue to study the relationship among the gut microbiome, immune function, nutrition, and inflammation.
The microbiome includes the microorganisms living in the digestive system. Diet quality, fiber, ultra-processed foods, added sugar, refined grains, medications, stress, and other factors may influence this environment.
Digestive concerns such as constipation, diarrhea, cramping, or discomfort may be signs that something needs attention, but they do not provide a complete diagnosis on their own.
Michele encourages listeners to look at the whole picture and seek qualified guidance when making decisions about gut health or nutrition.
There Is No Magic Food
Nutrition matters, but chronic inflammation is more complicated than one ingredient.
Online health advice often presents foods as heroes or villains.
Seed oils are bad.
Nightshades are bad.
Dairy is bad.
Sugar is bad.
Then the advice changes.
One day a food is promoted as essential. The next day, it is blamed for nearly every symptom.
People living with chronic illness deserve better guidance than fear-based lists.
Eliminating one food does not automatically erase an autoimmune, neurological, or inflammatory condition. Nutrition decisions should consider the individual’s diagnosis, symptoms, allergies, intolerances, medications, nutritional needs, preferences, and quality of life.
A registered dietitian nutritionist can help someone evaluate nutrition choices without creating unnecessary restriction or fear.
Diet Is Only One Part of the Story
Other factors Michele discusses include:
Genetics
Environmental exposures
The gut microbiome
Psychological stress
Poor sleep
Physical activity
Smoking
Obesity
Medical history
Existing autoimmune and chronic conditions
Recognizing these factors is not about blaming patients.
Many people already feel blamed for their weight, symptoms, food choices, fatigue, or inability to exercise consistently.
A more compassionate approach recognizes the complexity of the body and looks for realistic areas where support may improve someone’s health or quality of life.
Understanding Inflammation Without Fearing It
The goal is not to become afraid of every meal, symptom, or inflammatory response.
Acute inflammation is part of the body’s protective system. Chronic inflammation deserves attention, but it also requires context.
Helping yourself may include learning more about your condition, tracking symptom patterns, improving sleep where possible, finding physical activity you enjoy, discussing nutrition with a qualified professional, seeking smoking cessation support, and working closely with your medical team.
It does not mean you are expected to solve a chronic condition alone.
The message at the heart of Part 1 is simple:
We do not need to fear inflammation. We need to understand it.
That understanding helps us ask better questions and prepares us for the next conversation.

That is acute inflammation.
It arrives, performs a job, and ideally settles down.
Chronic inflammation is different. It continues over time and may become part of a more complicated story involving the immune system, chronic illness, sleep, pain, stress, mood, gut health, nutrition, and daily life.
As someone living with multiple sclerosis, I have learned that you cannot always look at one symptom, one food, or one lifestyle habit in isolation.
The body is interconnected.
